About the authority

Moving forward South Lakeland District Council finds itself in a much stronger position thanks to early work on financial savings which has enabled breathing space to focus on embedding the needs-led corporate plan. The corporate plan has undergone a full revision process during 2009-10 and the outcome is an authority with a clearer vision for the future success and prosperity of South Lakeland.

Assistant Directors have access to tools and support that enable them to manage their areas of operational responsibilities better. Clearer, more detailed service plans and easily accessible performance, finance and risk and equality information enables more effective management.

The Council’s Transformation Programme has been a major priority during 2009/10 and has developed a needs-led toolkit which can be used by all services to develop a genuine needs-led delivery capacity. The restructure is complete and the significant time and effort spent on getting to this position can be now be channelled into other projects.

Facing its external challenges, the Council has sought to strengthen its links with public sector partners across all levels within Cumbria. Our involvement has helped to achieve an improved governance structure for the Countywide Strategic Partnership, with the new Leaders Forum providing much more focused political direction at a Cumbria level.

South Lakeland is in excellent shape to tackle the changing public sector landscape while maintaining its unique identity. Now is an excellent time for an ambitious senior professional to continue the excellent work already undertaken to secure the future of this outstanding area.
