Welcome from the Chief Executive

Thank you for expressing an interest in this critical appointment. At Newcastle City Council we are going through a period of great change; our vision for transformation and regeneration is radical and ambitious for people, business and communities.

The City Council is looking for somebody who can help us to deliver a high performing human resources service to help deliver real outcomes for our organisation. We have worked hard to transform the way that we work but there are many challenges ahead to become a modern, fit-for-purpose organisation; our Human Resources Service will be crucial to help us to achieve this.

As well as being the regional capital of the North East we are also the major city between Scotland and the north of England which is a key role providing business, leisure and cultural opportunities to a very wide area.

Working closely with neighbouring Gateshead MBC the city has been re-born as a cultural destination bringing significant capital investment to Tyneside. Over the past decade this has resulted in a fundamental shift in the perception and image of Newcastle from the days of its heavy industrial past to that of a modern, vibrant city that is bursting with vitality while acknowledging a distinct culture and history.

Despite having re-built a strong economy the city has been feeling the effects of recession and we need to keep moving forward to the next level and show what we are going to be good at and what we are going to be specialists at. The expectation of difficult times ahead for the wider public sector means we have to get more from less, and HR has been identified as a means by which we can unlock the potential we know we have.

If you think you can make a difference in Newcastle, and can demonstrate HR skills of the highest order, then I encourage you to submit an application.

Barry Rowlands,
Chief Executive
